Overview

The project consisted of 33 acres split over 2 sites. The North site contained the former 1920’s Shredded Wheat Factory of which the original factory and silos were heritage listed; and the South site of up to 4 storey high industrial units, previously remediated ground, an underground firing range and pipe ducts.

Challenges &

Solutions

Demolishing a concrete wall with a heavy vehicle

Soft strip and removal of asbestos and other hazardous waste products under fully controlled conditions.

Demolition of the factory, excluding the listed buildings, and of the 27no. 35m high grain silos using a high reach excavator with rotating hydraulic cracker.

Liaison with the relevant service suppliers to arrange disconnection and isolation of water, gas and electric.

Demolition of site slab, proof dig to 2m and removal of obstructions.

Crushing and stock piling of demolition arisings.

Environmental monitoring.

Fortnightly coordination with the neighbours to fully inform them of the up and coming works.

Handover and coordination to the follow on main construction contractor.

Temporary works checks to the ground bearing slab to ensure that our 50-100t machinery could safely operate without collapse.

Careful demolition between heritage building and factory, and once completed, temporary weather proofing of exposed elevations.
