We tailor our methods to suit the varying needs of the different clients and sectors that we work with.
Each project must consider the overall client objectives and corporate responsibilities, in addition to site-specific conditions relating to the identified contaminants of concern and receptors.
At John F Hunt, we understand that a ‘one size fits all’ approach won’t work for your business so we put your specific needs at the forefront of everything we do.
Remediation Techniques and Methodologies
Remediation techniques will be determined on a site-by-site basis; some of the most common strategies we implement are set out below:
In-situ soil and groundwater methods
This is a broad term for various techniques which are applied to resolve complex and challenging pollution issues below ground.
The method works well with operational facilities as it requires only a small footprint to run, allowing us to carry out the works with minimum disruption to your day-to-day business activities.
When applied on redevelopment projects, using in-situ techniques could save up to 50% on cost when compared to excavation and land filling.
Complex sorting and materials management
Segregating usable non-contaminated materials from a contaminated soil matrix provides quick results which, comparable to land filling material, can result in a cost reduction in of around 20%.
As part of the overall site materials management strategy, the integration of complex sorting will help to divert significant volumes of material destined for landfill, as part of a sustainable remediation approach. Re-use of materials on the site is managed through the ‘CL:AIRE Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice’ or through environmental permitting mechanisms.
Bio-remediation is a tried and tested remedial method used to deal with a variety of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants, along with other organic pollutants such as PAH. this technique is typically 50% cheaper than sending your soils to landfill.
Using an enhanced version of the bio-remediation technique, we can quicken the process to balance speed of delivery with cost.
Bio-remediation is sustainable and cuts down on resource management; overall it can result in a reduction of lorry movements of up to 90%.
Stabilisation and Solidification
Stabilisation and solidification are quick and effective remediation techniques with the added benefit of delivering significant geo-technical improvements; this frequently saves the client money on construction related costs.
Using stabilisation or solidification can negate the need for the import of primary or secondary aggregates for use as pile mats and capping.
By saving lorry movements, this method allows development to progress quickly, with a proportion of costs attributable to a normal construction cost.
Asbestos in soils
Asbestos in soils can often constrain both operational and development sites. At John F Hunt Remediation, we have saved 500,000 tonnes of asbestos tainted soil from disposal at landfill, saving our clients more than £10m in associated costs.
This approach allows brownfield sites to become valuable development assets, and lets operational facilities remove balance sheet liability.
Invasive weed management
Using our approach of carefully managed excavation, we anticipate reducing the volumes of Japanese knotweed infested soils by up to 60% when compared to traditional excavations.
Our methods in treating Japanese Knotweed could ultimately result in a zero-landfill disposal solution.
Whilst the premise of our work will always be to provide sustainable remediation approaches designed to maximise materials on site and divert material from landfill, it is sometimes inevitable that contaminated soils will need to be removed from site.
As part of the overall materials management strategy, we can provide nationwide waste brokerage coverage to ensure best value to you.
Research and development (R&D)
Where there is scope on projects and site conditions John F Hunt Remediation will carry out bespoke pilot trials for innovative remediation techniques as part of an ongoing investment in R&D.
Our R&D investment has, in the past, helped clients save money and time on their projects whilst actively developing knowledge in the industry.
