JFHR was contracted to undertake the full demolition and foundation removal of the former Honey Monster factory after production was moved to new facility. The multi storey building was a 1930s insitu concrete structure with 40 concrete grain silos constructed to one end. These are now residential barges moored on the adjacent leg of the canal in the shadow of the 40m silos.

Description of Work
Demolition
The site is also located at the side of a spur from the Grand Union canal which was used to supply the raw materials in the days of the plant.
We installed floating pontoons and a scaffold fan to protect the canal during the works and liaison with all the adjacent occupiers, made more complex by being undertaken amidst the pandemic lockdown and the restrictions necessary to prevent Covid-19. We demolished the multi storey building and adjacent bridges using the John F Hunt Hitachi 870 high reach demolition excavator. We completed the main demolition in 22 weeks, followed by the removal of foundations and crushing of all the demolition arisings and followed by the remediation team.

Remediation
Extensive delineation investigations were undertaken to target and confirm the presence or absence of ground contamination across and near key point sources including above ground and below ground bulk storage tanks, some of which were used for fuel storage. Asbestos contamination entrained within legacy infrastructure including former rail sidings and, diesel contamination associated with buried tanks and oil interceptors on the site drainage line, in addition to a significant zone of historic landfill/Made Ground formed the focus of extensive detailed investigation. Concurrently with the soils remediation work, enabling works were completed to de-risk the future construction works where proposed basements were to be constructed.
